Geek of the Week: Aidan Cooney

The selection of this week’s geek of the week was a particularly hard one. There has been some really great developments within the industry that will be really interesting to follow. After much debate amongst the team here, it was decided that this week’s Geek of the Week is Aidan Cooney co-founder and CEO of Opta.

For those not yet familiar with this series: some time ago, the CloudWedge team launched a feature called Geek of the Week. In this feature we award the prestigious honor of ‘Geek of the Week’ to someone from our news posts of that week we feel have done something that deserves special mention or praise. This is either directly through their actions or those of their companies. This award is a certification of honor as the receiver is considered to be a ‘cloud leader.’

Opta is a high definition sports data collection company that provided touch-by-touch data used by Google on the Google Cloud Platform to predict winners of World Cup matches. Additionally, Opta utilizes the cloud for some of their services including for their widgets.

We feel Cooney deserves this honor as he is responsible for the direction and development of the company.

Cooney founded Opta Sportsdata in May 2001, prior to this he worked as in business development and as a director at CBS Sportsline and Sports.com, before this Cooney worked for a few years as a Consultant at Corporate Executive Search

Cooney Graduated from Durham University in England.
