Geek of the Week: Ashar Aziz

Some time ago, the CloudWedge team launched a feature called Geek of the Week. In this feature we award the prestigious honor of ‘Geek of the Week’ to someone from our news posts of that week that we feel have done something that deserves special mention or praise. This is either directly though their actions or those of their companies. This award is a certification of honor as the receiver is considered to be a ‘cloud leader.’

We are happy to announce this week’s Geek of the Week is Ashar Aziz, Founder, Vice Chairman, and Chief Strategy Officer at FireEye. We mentioned FireEye this week with their latest offering in the cloud security industry, which utilizes the cloud to protect end users from receiving viruses, malware, phishing attacks and other malicious tactics used to steal an organization’s information.

Ashar founded FireEye back in 2004 and worked as chief executive officer until late 2012. Since then he has served as vice chairman of the board and chief strategy officer. Furthermore, Ashar has been chief technology officer from 2012 to earlier this year. During his time at FireEye, Ashar has been essential in developing revolutionary security technologies that are being used in FireEye’s Malware Protection Systems. He has also received over 20 patents for a number of different inventions in areas of networking, cryptography, network security and data center virtualization.

FireEye was not the first company Ashar founded, Terraspring, a virtualization company that was acquired by Sun Microsystems back in 2002. He also worked for 12 years at Sun Microsystems as a distinguished engineer focused on networking and network security.

Ashar has a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Master’s in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley where he received the U.C. Regents Fellowship.
