The rapid maturation of cloud technology means that IT professionals must stay up to date on the latest cloud skillsets or risk being left behind. Microsoft and edX have partnered to bring free training to those wanting to learn C#, how to build cloud apps or other cloud related topics.
The edX organization is a non-profit educational website built by the likes of Berkeley, Harvard and MIT. The edX website was designed to host free massive open online courses (MOOCs) to those interested in attending. The edX platform allows students to attend class at any time, from any device, from anywhere in the world.
The news of Microsoft partnering with edX to offer courses online marks the first time a corporate organization has partnered with the online learning platform to offer branded coursework. Microsoft’s Born to Learn blog says, “Our courses provide hands-on experience with broad reach, cutting-edge technologies in areas including cloud services, mobile development, and data sciences in order to bring the learner the greatest opportunity to gain relevant and marketable skills.”
Microsoft’s Born to Learn blog goes on to list all of the courses that will be released on edX. Here is a list of what edX and Microsoft will initially offer:

  • Programming with C#
  • Introduction to TypeScript
  • Introduction to Bootstrap
  • Querying with Transact SQL
  • Building Cloud Apps with Microsoft Azure
  • Introduction to Office 365 APIs
  • Windows PowerShell Fundamentals

For those wanting to further solidify their credentials, the courses will come with a certificate of completion. Students can audit the class and take the coursework for free however the certificate you receive at the end of this path is a certification of completion. If you pay a $90 fee, edX will send you a verified certificate that you could list on a resume, present to an employer or hang on your wall.
