Avnet Teams with IBM to Innovate IoT Platform

Avnet has made a name for itself by becoming one of the top technology distributors in the world. IBM and Avnet have just agreed upon a deal that will help customers deploy IoT solutions based on the popular Watson Cloud Platform.
The move is expected to help both entities create new revenue streams within the IoT market. Research firm IDC says in their Worldwide IoT forecast for 2015-2020 that spending for IoT could eclipse $900B in 2016.
Avnet has already worked on some fairly sophisticated IoT projects. Avnet mentions that it recently worked alongside SPICA technologies to create a smart city solution that helped improve water safety.
Avnet says that their solutions helps smart cities reduce the risk of illnesses such as Legionnaire’s disease by using IoT devices connected to the water pipes which provide real-time analytics on the quality of water. Avnet mentions that they used IBM Core Middleware, IBM Enterprise Analytics and IBM Cloud deployments to facilitate this task.
“Developing an IoT solution is incredibly complex and requires deep technical knowledge from a semiconductor level to advanced data analytics running in a data center,” says Patrick Zammit, President of Avnet Technology Solutions.
“Avnet and IBM joined together to simplify the development cycle at every stage and give our customers the power to unlock the potential of IoT,” adds Zammit.
IBM and Avnet will work together on proof of concept solutions to demonstrate the possibilities of IoT to Avnet’s existing customer base of over 100,000 entities. Organizations will also gain access to Avnet’s Cloud Marketplace, which has add-ons and features for IoT deployments.
Under the agreement, Avnet can also publish IBM cloud services and infrastructure for customers to buy within the Avnet marketplace. Popular IBM products such as Bluemix can be easily implemented into your Avnet deployment.
Avnet and IBM are hitting the IT conference trail to talk about their new innovations. Avnet will be featured at IBM PartnerWorld Leadership conference which is currently underway at the Hilton Bonnet Creek Hotel in Orlando, Florida.
Avnet and IBM will also be showcased at the InterConnect 2016 conference being held next week in Las Vegas.
