There’s no doubt that the PlayStation 4 gaming console is one of the most successful consoles of all time. Hardcore gaming enthusiasts have wondered if Sony will continue to capitalize on the popularity of the PlayStation 4 by releasing a PlayStation 5.
Comments given to a Japanese newspaper by Sony Computer Entertainment’s Executive Vice President Masayasu Ito seem to hint that a PlayStation 5 is in the works.
“I think there will be a PS5. However, I don’t know what form it’ll have. It could be a physical console, or it could be in the cloud,”mentions Ito.
Talks of a PlayStation 5 seem to coincide with Sony’s ongoing efforts to build popularity around its already existing cloud gaming platform called PlayStation Now.
VCPost speculates that PlayStation 5 could happen in 2017, although no official word has been sent out from Sony concerning a release date for the PlayStation 5.
Although much of the PlayStation 5′s existence is heavy speculation at this point, it’s fair to say that the PS5 will happen based on Ito’s comments. Whether the PS5 is a cloud, a console or a combination of both is still to be determined.
In recent years, Sony has distanced itself from consumer electronics and the company seems to be focusing on its more successful product line ups, such as the PlayStation.
Microsoft, Sony’s main competitor in the gaming space, has made significant strides in cloud gaming arena over the past year. In August of 2014, CloudWedge reported that Microsoft Research has effectively solved cloud gaming lag, which has been viewed as one of the biggest blockades of the cloud gaming experience.
The VCPost article speculates that a definitive answer on the PlayStation 5′s existence could come at Paris Gamesweek, which happens in October of 2015.
