Cloud is becoming more than just a buzzword for IT professionals. It defines the way we do business in the 21st century. Clutch.co has released a survey detailing the tasks that SMBs perform exclusively in the cloud.
The survey details the differences in SMB’s backup strategies and the backup tactics that each has implemented. 48% of those that took the survey indicated that they commonly use their mobile devices to look at data stored in the cloud. Could statistics like these provide clues on the state of cloud storage in the SMB environment?
61% of organizations said that they had to be compliant with an industry standard in order to operate a cloud storage service. With that said, security and compliance issues are the number 1 barrier to entry in regards to the way SMBs adopt cloud storage.
“The great thing about storage as a service systems is that if I am on the road and someone asks me to answer a question [about a work-related document], I don’t have to wait until I get back home,” says Dave Linthicum, an SVP at Cloud Technology Partners.
“I can access my files and give the person an immediate response,” added Linthicum.
The top 5 most popular cloud storage services used by SMBs are:

  • Dropbox
  • Google Drive
  • Apple iCloud
  • Microsoft OneDrive
  • Carbonite

Interestingly enough, Amazon’s S3 storage service didn’t make the top 5. The popular cloud storage is listed as #6 according to Clutch.co’s survey.
Clutch.co says that its Small Business Survey attracted 438 representatives of small businesses that pitched in their input.
Clutch dictated that in order to participate in this survey, your small to medium sized business must have 11 to 1,000 employees within your organization. The survey took place in October of 2015 and the data should give your organization direction and guidance concerning the cloud backup strategies of similarly sized businesses.
