Equinix Hosts Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Data Center Facility in Ashburn, VA

If you’re used to deploying workloads in the public cloud, you’ve probably realized that every cloud provider has a data center located near Ashburn, VA. The area is quickly becoming known as “Data Center Alley” considering the sheer amount of cloud services that have setup their East coast operations near this location.
Equinix, which already has data centers operating in Ashburn, has just announced that it will be opening a new facility within Data Center Alley to complement its existing campus. A press release went out recently detailing the event. Equinix mentions that that a ceremony will take place today from 1:45PM to 5:30PM EST, commemorating the new data center in the region. Equinix will host a conference, in which several heavy hitters in the world of business of politics will be invited. Among those speaking are:

  • Terry McAuliffe – Governor, State of Virginia
  • Barbara Comstock – US House of Representative, Virginia’s 10th District
  • Buddy Rizer – Loudoun County Dept of Economic Development
  • Howard Horowitz – Senior Vice President of Global Real Estate for Equinix.

Those who are in the Northern Virginia area can attend the groundbreaking ceremony. Equinix simply asks that you RSVP since space will be limited. Equinix will go over their plan to cultivate the region with multiple data centers. According to Equinix, their goal is to build 5 additional data centers in this region which will bring over 1M square footage of data center space once all of the projects are complete.
Equinix is heavily invested in Northern Virginia. To date, Equinix has sunk over $1B into data center and infrastructure developments within the Loudoun County, VA area since 1999. Equinix’s data centers serve over 750 businesses including government, government contractors and ecommerce websites within the Northern Virginia area.
