The cloud has leveled the playing field in terms of being able to acquire computational power at a low cost. Through IBM’s IaaS provider SoftLayer, organizations can now gain access to supercomputing power on bare metal servers that contain NVIDIA Tesla K80 dual GPU accelerators.
Being able to utilize a robust GPU on a bare metal server gives organizations the ability to rapidly perform intensive calculations. These calculations can become extremely important in fields such as genomics, deep learning, machine learning and more. Using bare metal servers in the cloud, organizations can essentially do more with less and scale up as they see fit.
Through a press release, IBM claims that SoftLayer it is the first IaaS provider to offer bare metal servers that includes GPU accelerated computing power. IBM goes on to say that SoftLayer is also the first and only provider that offers Tesla K80 GPUs in the cloud.
“Our global network of data centers, connectivity features, bare metal servers, and GPU offerings meet the rigorous requirements of most supercomputing workloads,” mentions Marc Jones, Chief Technology Officer at SoftLayer.
IBM goes on to say that its bare metal, GPU enabled cloud servers have already begun disrupting industries. One specific example that IBM mentions is the case of Artomatix.
With Artomatix, organizations can create digital media in the cloud. Artomatix says that with the introduction of NVIDIA’s GPU acceleration on SoftLayer’s bare metal servers, Artomatix has been able to disrupt the traditional digital media creation process by giving a single artist the tools do the work of an entire team.
Ian Buck, VP of Accelerated Computing at NVIDIA says, “With the addition of Tesla K80 GPUs, SoftLayer’s unique cloud offering for HPC will dramatically expand access to supercomputing-class performance, accelerating the pace of important new advances.”
