Veritas NetBackup 7.7 Updates Cloud Connectors, Increases Performance by 30x

Veritas, the information management arm of Symantec, has announced that they have released NetBackup 7.7. The newest release of this software provides significant enhancements when compared to its predecessors.
With Veritas NetBackup 7.7, organizations can easily add cloud storage as a backup solution within their environments. Veritas is somewhat cloud agnostic, meaning enterprises can utilize one of the following cloud services as a backup in conjunction with the new release of NetBackup:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Google
  • Hitachi Data Systems (HDS)
  • Verizon
  • Cloudian

“Today many enterprises are adding cloud storage to their menu of backup storage choices to gain the advantages of elasticity, agility, and OpEx pricing, or simply to replace tape,” mentions Ana Pinczuk, SVP for Backup and Recovery at Veritas.
“NetBackup 7.7 is designed to exploit these storage alternatives in a much more optimal way, enabling IT organizations to easily incorporate cloud storage into their backup strategy, without compromise,” adds Pinczuk.
Some of the really cool features of NetBackup 7.7 includes the ability to increase backup speeds by 30x. Outside of that, NetBackup allows administrators to backup their virtual infrastructure along with their SQL servers and NetApp clustered Data ONTAP. NetBackup 7.7 provides a self service portal to conduct these backups, making it user friendly and easy to implement.
There’s also a new cloud connector for Amazon S3 storage that has been included in NetBackup 7.7. With the new version of the S3 cloud connector, organizations are able to more rapidly backup their data in the Amazon cloud when compared to the previous version of this connector. Veritas says that the new version of the Amazon S3 cloud connector implements multi-streaming and other methods that intelligently make use of a site’s available bandwidth.
One of the neatest updates to the 7.7 release is the inclusion of NetBackup’s Auto Image Replication (AIR) service. With NetBackup’s AIR, organizations can build catalogs of data while preserving older versions of the backup.
Veritas says that NetBackup 7.7 is currently available through its channel partners.
