Mozy Review

Known to be one of the most successful online backup companies around, Mozy hit the ground running back in 2005 when the backup space was beginning to boom. Mozy was started by Berkeley Data Systems which was acquired by EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) in 2007. With this massive enterprise funding and overseeing them, Mozy became one of the leaders in the industry with relative ease. They boast a whopping 100,000 business accounts and over 6 million (yes, million) total customers. Even though Mozy is close to a decade old, there was constant fierce competition, especially when they were bought by EMC Corp. From the get go, Mozy understood the need to separate themselves from other service providers. So, they had their gifted IT team brainstorm and come up with quite a few astounding ideas that paved the way for the industry as a whole. Some of these ideas turned into reality which included “smart backup” (also known as “Block Level Incremental Backup”), a way for your system to be smart enough to only backup data that has not been backed up yet. This ultimately reduces your bandwidth usage and increases transfer speed. They also feature the automatic backup option. Set your backup once and never have to worry again.

Features

The smart backup technology and automatic backup option are just some of the features that help Mozy attract customers. They also have an app for mobile access for Apple and Android. Here are some of Mozy’s other top features:

  • File Scanning
  • Automatic Backup
  • Data Seeding
  • Bandwidth Throttle (manage bandwidth usage)
  • Open/Locked File Support
  • Data Encryption
  • Customized Configuration & Installation
  • Backup via Software/Web/DVD Restore
  • Mozy 2X Protect (simultaneous backups to external hard drive and Mozy data centers)
  • Multiple User Management

Another key feature worth elaborating on is the Active Directory Integration which is designed for business accounts and specifically works with MozyEnterprise. This allows corporate super users (e.g. IT managers) to control employee access with a single username and password. Aside from being a great destination for the average household user, Mozy has also invested lots of hard work into creating a unique backup platform for corporations of all sizes.

One more thing to note is that while Mozy is PC and Mac compatible, it is not suited for customers using a Linux operating system.

Ease of Use

Signing up for Mozy was one of the easier processes we encountered in relation to other providers. Mozy asks you for your name, email address and a password. Once that is completed, you will need to fill out a very short survey about your current employment (what field you work in). You then receive an email with a link to download and install the Mozy software on your computer. The download and installation is completed within a matter of minutes.

Once everything has been installed, Mozy then provides an option of choosing which files you would like to backup. When the initial backup begins, Mozy will let you know that it could take a while. You can however continue to use your computer as you normally would during this time. We were originally worried that a slow backup process would become a reoccurring theme. However, we forgot that Mozy employs the Block Level Incremental Backup (smart backup) feature as noted above. After the initial backup, you will be looking at a time frame of a matter of seconds for all future backups.

Furthermore, you can choose various options such as scheduled or automatic backups by opening the Mozy Panel. It is easy to navigate, control and upload files/folders, especially with the recent launch of the Restore Manager which enables you to retrieve your files in an extraordinarily efficient manner.

Security

Mozy goes above and beyond when it comes to security for its customers by using military grade security measures they like to call “Tritanium.” Mozy is one of a few companies that must take these steps since many clients are Fortune 500 corporations. The industry standard seems to be 256-bit AES encryption to protect your data which is only one part of the security process here. Mozy backs that up with a 128-bis SSL encryption. If you are an Enterprise, they also provide you with an optional 448-bit Blowfish encryption key.

Customer Support

Mozy has also maintained a great reputation for having reliable customer support. You can reach Mozy by phone, Live Chat or a personalized ticket system when logged into your account. Please note that the phone and Live Chat options are only made available if you have a paid Mozy account. Should none of these options interest you, Mozy is one of the most active online backup companies on the major social networks, so you can always reach them that way. You can also browse through their Knowledgebase or tutorials section. Moreover, their representatives are friendly, helpful and truly understand the Mozy software.
