When a new VPN comes to market, we generally only hear about it after the fact. Once fully functional, new VPN services send out dozens of press releases and do various other forms of marketing for their brand. But, this was not the case with the new and recently launched TotalVPN. In fact, TotalVPN did a full ‘180 degrees’ turn and took a completely different approach to entering the VPN market. They initiated the marketing side of the business well before they started accepting new customers. Was this because of a phenomenal all-inclusive service or was this just one big marketing stunt? Let’s find out below.
Features
One of the key accomplishments of TotalVPN was that they essentially looked at all of the other VPN services on the market and took the best of everything in order to create the ultimate VPN service. This was certainly the case in regard to their features list. TotalVPN offers some of the most advanced features on the market, which we list below.
- Unlimited bandwidth
- Unlimited data
- Unlimited server switches
- Zero logging of activity
- 40+ server locations
- OpenVPN, IkeV2, PPTP and L2TP protocols
- 3 simultaneous device connections
- 99% uptime guarantee
- Public Wi-Fi protection
- Support just about all devices – Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, iPad, Android Tablets, Chromebook, Xbox, PlayStation, AppleTV, Amazon Fire, and Blackberry
While the above is a pretty impressive lineup, what’s important to note is that TotalVPN is a new VPN on the market. Thus, online streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu have not blocked their IP addresses as is the case with many other VPN services on the market. Moreover, while TotalVPN currently only boasts a lineup of shared IP addresses, we heard they are working on implementing dedicated IPs. So, in the event that Netflix, Hulu and other media services do block their shared IPs, TotalVPN customers won’t be affected by this as they will have the ability to switch to a dedicated IP address. TotalVPN Server Locations: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States.
Privacy
It is unfortunate that TotalVPN doesn’t really put an emphasis on their security protocols on their website. If you are looking for complete security, privacy and anonymity, they are one of the best on the market. TotalVPN uses SSL via military grade 256-bit encryption. Additionally, as stated above, there is zero logging of your browsing activity, though they do make a note to their customers not to do anything illegal using their software (this is likely simply a case of internal legal reasoning).
Pricing
For such a value driven service, we were expecting TotalVPN plans to be in the range of $8-12 per month. We were stunned to see their current pricing model. For starters, TotalVPN offers a free plan that isn’t all so bad if you are looking for basic Internet browsing. It comes with limited bandwidth and data transfer (2 Mbps), you can use all of the protocols on offer, three different location connection options, and one device connection. We recommend starting with this option just to see how good of a VPN this is. Once you need more, you can always upgrade to their paid plan which is $4.99 per month billed annually or $7.49 per month if you want monthly payment options. Both of these plans come with all of the features offered in their service.
Speed
Many people are not aware of this but TotalVPN was started by a massive UK-based IT company called JDI. They have years of experience in servers, hosting, backup, software – essentially anything that has to do with Internet browsing. Subsequently, they are light years ahead of the competition since this is, quite literally, their business. So when we saw that running their VPN software came back with a speed of 81Mbps (when we generally see 80-85Mbps without a VPN), we weren’t surprised. If speed is what you are looking for, this is the VPN for you.
Ease of Use
If you are an individual looking for a good VPN, look no further. The team behind TotalVPN has made their VPN client one of the most intuitive ones out there. For starters, downloading TotalVPN is done with one click. Simply provide a name, email address and a password, to download TotalVPN. Once the software opens up, there are two sections within the client. On the left side you can choose the location you want to connect to and on the right side shows a map where you are connected to in addition to the protocol you are using, your session duration, your bandwidth usage and your speed. If you’d like to change protocols, simply click the Settings button on the top right hand side of the client. If for some reason you get lost (you won’t), there is a nifty Help button right next to the Settings icon. Overall, TotalVPN was one of the more simplistic VPN software’s we have come across.
Support
If you are a long time reader of CloudWedge reviews, you know that we place a fairly large importance on live chat when it comes to customer support. Not only does TotalVPN offer live chat, but they do so 24/7. To be clear, most other VPN service providers don’t even offer any form of live chat. Phone and email support are also a primary function of their customer service channels – both 24/7. They also offer a help center, an FAQs section and a knowledgebase. Still aren’t sure about their support? You can get in touch with TotalVPN representatives via social media channels – Facebook, Twitter or Google+, where they are active and helpful.
